Mariachiways is a playful reinterpretation of Paul Rand’s famous Jazzways magazine cover. Rand was a pioneering American graphic designer known for his bold, simple, and highly effective work, including iconic logos for IBM, ABC, and UPS.
As a Mexican designer, I wanted to reinterpret the piece in a way that feels personal while honoring Rand’s iconic aesthetic. His design already featured bright, festive colors that naturally echo the energy of mariachi culture, so only a few key changes were needed to shift the tone. I replaced the jazz flute with maracas, swapped in a vihuela, attached a keyboard to the horizontal stripes to mimic an accordion, added a sombrero to the figure, and changed the word “Jazz” to “Mariachi” to create a fun and fresh homage.
